OK… we all by now know this tragic story of the USS Fitzgerald being struck by a cargo ship. Well after seeing the photo damage of the two ships last night I began to see some odd things. The photos show appropriate damage to all the correct places but to me look very strange. I served on board naval ships and am a trained accident investigator. in my mind I started to have more questions than answers after seeing the photo. First off the US Naval ship is an Aegis class Arleigh Burke class destroyer which was built around the radar system. It was designed to be able to track multiple targets at close in and far out and get a weapons lock on those targets and be able to fire her weapons on as many as 100 targets at once. Yes her Prada didn’t pick up a 700-800 ft cargo ship running along side her and in the same direction? There would have been also a sonar track not mention look outs posted on the weather deck. This is highly traveled shipping lane. All ships in those lanes run with all their lights on and transponders on. The sea was calm and it was a clear night.
