Last “balcony appearance” today by Emperor Akihito who is abdicating on April 30th. In his speech, shown here, he “expressed relief that Japan had been free of war” during his reign (which might be an oblique reference to occasions when there has been such a risk). In any case, in 2019 Japan will be firmly entering the Eurasian phase as the sun sets on the other empire-without-an-emperor across the Pacific.
