    While we’re on the subject of Charles-Marie Widor, when I was about 12 or 13, when his works began to be performed more often, I bought a recording on the old Nonesuch label of his fifth organ symphony (one of his “masterworks” along with the 4th, 6th, and 9th), and immediately fell in love with the grandeur of his composing. The movement that immediately “sold” me was the first movement of the 5th. I found a performance with the score. It’s not the most imaginative nor my favorite, but the score at least gives you the idea of how very difficult to perform Widor is. After all, these are symphonies, for one very LARGE organ and for one very OVERWORKED and UNDERPAID organist. Hope you enjoy ( may have posted this before, but so what?):
