This one is by way of perverse entertainment, and is for Dr Farrell in particular…I will name the cat Arnold and I’m sure you will get my meaning 🙂 I have a good friend here in Manila, an expat American who specializes in ‘Free Jazz’ improvisations; I am reluctant to send him this post cos I doubt he would get my sense of irony in doing so…he is a good guy too, though the music he makes does leave me cold. I won’t even condemn it fully cos I have seen some such music – The Art Ensemble of Chicago as an example – which I would even applaud in some ways despite the ‘unsonorious’ content…my ‘applause’ would be to do with the historical developments of such stuff, mostly to do with the politics of Jazz history, though in truth even that is dubious I know, and my experience of it was many years ago when I was starting out in the world of music. To give a corollary, Schoenberg’s ‘Survivor From Warsaw’ atonal piece did ‘touch me emotionally’ though most likely more because of the historical association than the actual music. I would make the comment too that the accompaniment here to the cat’s machinations on piano is pretty good lol!:) https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1670232623199062

I can’t remember how long ago, but Joseph did have a blog comparing Schoenberg’s contrived ‘expressionism’ with the innate talent of Nora the Piano Cat … personally, I’d rather listen to Nora’s improvisations and the CATcerto than Schoenberg 😉
No disagreement there Margaret…I actually like the cat! lol 🙂
