More relevant today with the possible attempt to retake the Golan Heights shaping up as Syr-ran’s response to Trump, Nut, and Yahoo provocations and attempt to strangle Iran economically. Unlikely though it may seem, it could very well end up in Syria retaking the Golan Heights from Israel, given motivated and battle-hardened victorious fighters abound in Syria. At least worth a try as a response to Trump withdrawal from nuke deal.
I’d like to think the Syrian Arab Army is that confident of their strength but I think it’s got other more immediate problems with ISIS/ISIL/DAESH pockets still needing to be addressed. Plus the US is still camped out in Eastern Syria and shows no signs of leaving….
I am not so sure anymore, because except for IDLIB pocket which is policed by Turkey, all other pockets of rebels have been taken over (and are being cleaned out) except the ones in southern Syria, Daraa, etc, all east of Golan Heights. Assad could boost his legitimacy in the sunni arab world like Nasrallah by scoring a victory on the ground. Because Israel’s last aerial foray got both of their planes shot down — since then Israel only shoots missiles at Syria. So, if their air superiority is naught, and their ground forces practice shooting at stone throwing kids, they would have to use nukes. Either way Israel ends up the bigger loser. At this time, Assad’s forces are being redeployed in South Syria, and after cleaning Daraa, they will secure the Golan Heights — unless the US or Turkey attack from North.
