While I’m pretty sure that the “crisis” will be overcome, here is a little summany. The issue is the completion of a long tunnel to connect Turin and Lyon with a freight line (technically NOT high speed). There are contrasting analyses as to the economic advantages, and the people in the Alpine valley concerned have been campaigning against it for years (the so-called “left” has until recently piggybacked the protest). The League’s position is that at the very least the project is valuable from the Keynsian point of view with construction and materials jobs, while the 5Stars object on environmental grounds (the area has heavy asbestos (and some URANIUM) deposits and the dust from this would not produce the best pure Alpine air. The response is, that the tunnel will cut pollution from truck traffic. What was missing from the discourse until literally last week was the One Belt agreements to be signed with Hsi Jin Ping during his visit to Rome; better overland rail routes, especially for FREIGHT, are part of the idea.
Some H.O.S.: the tunnel boring aspect. These involve not only the train tunnels, but other tunnels for emergency use and ventilation. This brings to mind not only the WWI tunnels on the Italian front, but all of the “woo woo” matters connected with tunnels and advanced tunnel boring.
