Have just got a copy of Thomas Mann’s “The Magic Mountain”, his 1928 novel about politics and esotericism in Europe. Never too late to read the classics!

When you finish it, I do not have time to read the book, a synopsis of the ‘irrationality’ that was evident during that period could provide a clue to what we are witnessing in the New World today. Thanks!
The story takes place in a sanatorium in Davos (!) and the author himself says that it depicts a Masonic-style initiation… still don’t have time? 🙂
I can can not keep up with the ‘flow’ of new business now, plus help my wife, plus a few other things. My only outlet is to check-in here, and keep up the ‘flow’. Based on all the info about the book it would probably give me nightmares! As it is nowadays, my dreams are peaceful and interesting. Something new every night!!!
Looks like it will end up in my library soon !
I have a copy of that original 1928 ed in the original german…too bad I can’t read german! I have a few of his novels, he’s a good writer…
Great book. Read it years ago at a much younger age. The idea some cling to their illness cause that is their life therefore getting well would end it was a mind blower for a twenty something year old.
Example of people stuck in a negative comfort zone. Imagine a group of old biddies sitting around competing to see which one has the worst medical condition. If they recovered from their condition well,,,,how ever could they replace all that attention they were getting?
R.L.S., I recommend reading &/or watching the theatrical adaptation of Molière’s “The Imaginary Invalid (Le malade imaginaire)”
Anyone can read the play’s English translation for free here:
