A novel about timelines. “Transitions” by Iain Banks talks about a Fringe-like world where an ancient secret society, the Concern, has a technique for changing timelines so that they can adjust their present or future. That society falls under the power of extreme control freaks who are, however, disconcerted to find that people everywhere are gaining the power to “transit” on their own outside of the Concern’s control.
Fascinating though I must confess that I skipped about half the book detailing the violent antics of the psychopaths, since we now see them in the public arena anyway…
