I’ve heard this quotation before, and I’ve often wondered – because Diderot’s turn of phrase is very similar to Bavarian Illuminati founder Adam Weishaupt’s in this respect – if he and some of the other Encyclopediasts were members of those types of lodges? The language, strangling with entrails, is specific to some Masonic oaths, which makes me wonder.
Yeah, Weishaupt wasn’t too keen on royal families and religion either. I just wonder what this world would be without either.
