I find this oddly comforting somehow… but I’ve watched a few of these things and I’m wondering why the Union Pacific is operating so many steam engines…. TODAY…. it can’t be just a publicity stunt. One would think these things are very expensive to operate and maintain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNltLIY5Ip8

My dad would’ve loved to have seen this… he worked on the railroads for MANY years after the war.
Good grief… they’re actually using these things to pull revenue trains??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhgHrDbN4EU
Yes, something nostalgically appealing about that era. I’m fascinated by these magnificent steam engines. My grandfather worked for MKT and all the men in my family were steam train buffs. There’s a lot of interest in restoring them now. One of the ‘Big Boys’ on tour made a stop in Austin a few years ago, amazing to see! This comment on the part 1 video gives a sense of its power: “The mighty 844 doesn’t actually go anywhere. When it spins the wheels, it rotates the earth underneath it.”
Maybe they see steam as a backup solution. So where does that leave the Muskian “hypertrains”?
As with the Platonic Gold Reserves once deposited at FRBNY in their coarse state …
