I found on You Tube an old vinyl recording of CPE Bach harpsichord concerti Wq 8 and Wq 18 (the latter with lyric 1st and blistering 3rd movements). Modern era performances by the LA Chamber orchestra, but in spite of that, a good performance. What gets me though, is that they’re more proof that the small two and three choir instruments that the Bachs are USUALLY performed on are simply not up to the music itself, yet the musicological junta keeps doing it this way. This music demands the big Mietkes, Hasses, and Silbermann harpsichords, not these small Flemish, French, and English things. And if you can’t find those, then swallow the “authentic performance” dogma and get a Neupert revival harpsichord and take a lesson from Karl Richter: performance of the Bachs on harpsichords without 16′ choirs is in a certain sense NOT “authentic” and “period performance.” Ok… rant over…
