    • I think Moonlight Sonata is one of those pieces that nearly every pianist, at least slightly into the intermediate level, attempts to play with the emotion we think Beethoven intended. I admit, this is absolutely wonderful to hear how he actually “heard it in his head”. I know I never heard it sound so clearly Beethoven on a grand piano (Steinway or otherwise). Simply wonderful. As a side note, I can just see my middle school piano teacher pointing out his absolutely perfect hand positions. LOL. I wonder if he got tapped on HIS hands when he didn’t make perfect little finger hammers! You have to remember, Dr. Farrell, for those of us who started out on a pianoforte, not an organ, Beethoven is probably our equivalent of Bach in your ears. For me, Beethoven played beautifully can bring tears to my eyes, even if it isn’t on the original instrument.
