I recommend everyone who insists on KEEPING their smartphones, especially for emergency, to keep them in a Faraday Bag (I use Silent Pocket that double folds – the leather one is expensive and DOES NOT WORK) so you are not con…traced.. uh, followed by Big Brother. I use a “Mission Darkess” brand for my i phone and turn the hotspot on when acessing the Internet. Turn it off when not using my iPad. Can be a pain sometimes because hotspot automatically shuts down when I not active. Learned to live with it. Ditched my wifi cable modem a year ago.
