I had the fortune to go to Vienna for a few days last week and my Austrian friend took me to an accordion festival. “Yeah, great”, I thought. “Just what I have always wanted to do. sigh” Then Franziska Hatz and her Orchestra sat on the stage and blew me out of the water. They played everything from jazz to traditional Austrian/Styrian music. Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2jVaNBn_DY

I once heard JS Bach’s orchestral suites played by a Japanese koto orchestra over at my friends’ George and Hilda Lastau’s in South Dakota. I insisted George make a cassette recording of it, and I have it to this day. It’s lovely.
I thought of you when I went to the Vienna Symphony Hall where there is one of the largest pipe organs that I have ever seen. I plan on doing some research and when they have a concert that focuses on that instrument, I hope to go hear it! We sat up in the nosebleed section which had a perfect view of it (the orchestra, not so much). I don’t think my Austrian friend knew how many instruments that I played and why I love this hall so much (piano, guitar, recorder(s), and saxophone.) She is an architect/landscape architect so for her, just sitting in this grand space and looking at the incredible detail is almost enough for her. Me, I can’t get enough of all of it. Meanwhile, I will focus on learning German!
