Let me add some backstory on the Arecibo Radio telescope. This facility -Doctor Farrel use this term a lot- was a multilayered installation. Initially this was built, to be used by the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency and the Pentagon.

The CIA used this facility for the development of the famous Corona Satellites. The first espionage satellites that were used by The United States. Later the Department of Defense, used the facility to spy on the Soviet Union, using the moon as a mirror, projecting the frequency waves sent by the radio telescope, and bouncing the signal over the Soviet Union. Basically making a map identifying military bases, nuclear facilities etc. In other words, at deeper level this was used as a sonar.

The facility also helped with the LGM-30 Minuteman project. All those ICBM missiles, their telemetry and trajectory was measured from Arecibo. Much later it was used as tool for astronomy, quasars, pulsars and all sorts of things were observed from there.

There are many other facilities in this baby leviathan Island. Is not the only -wink wink- sonar facility. I won’t say more because, don’t want to be a nuclear target. What I am trying to say here, this was a military facility, ET and astronomy was the public front.
