Very interested in the subject of education. Classical Education is an open system and Standardize test education would be a closed one. There is a new Secretary of Education in Puerto Rico. Her name is Julia Keleher an American from Philadelphia. A reporter asked her, what was her opinion after visiting the schools ? She got emotional, at least someone is giving honest answers, I would cry too.

The education that the United States brought to the island was classical. That world view fitted like a glove, because under the Spanish Monarchy we had a classical system, but it was only available to a select few. I have seen text books written by American Scholars dating back to the 1920’s, where kids from the 8th grade were reading at college level. This was American teaching back then and If you heard Puerto Ricans kids talking, they were very very articulated and sharp. My Grandfather who died at 100 years of age spoke like Miguel De Cervantes and was fluent in English.

The stronghold for the Renaissance Federation for classical teaching would be the University of Puerto Rico. There is a small group of Professors who are defenders of the faith, meaning Classical Education or Death ! They don’t give standardize tests and give students these yellow notebooks to answer open questions for the exams. They are constantly complaining that students are arriving at the University without the necessary skills.

The solution to education is not bureaucratic is philosophical. We need a philosophical bail out PRONTO ! Is not about throwing money to the problem, the philosophy of teaching needs to change. Just saw the PISA Test results and Vietnam scores went through the roof, the schools there have dirt floors for Christ Sake. We don’t need computers in the classroom we just need to return to our old philosophy in education and prepare Professors accordingly.

    • I wholeheartedly concur!

    • Kenny, would you please submit this post as a vidchat question? I’d really love to hear Dr. Farrell address your comments here.
My take on this whole situation is this: the Enlightenment is out of copyright and available for free download on the internet; if you want to properly educate a child you need to read the works of the finest minds of our civilisation and then work out how to get that child to read and understand those same works themselves. Won’t cost a cent, but a lot of time and dedication.
