An interesting conversation that “steel-mans” the need and importance of one of our most cherished Artists. Mrs. Tureck also does her best to “steel-man” the importance of our ever so black-eyed composers of “atonality”. I know “atonality” is a dirty little word in this sphere of (a)harmonious rattletrap thus, I found another little phrase that such prefer when describing these chalkboard compositions: free-tonal. I’ve heard of “free-education”, “free-healthcare”, and the like, but “free-tonal”? Well, I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief as once we’re secured ever so tightly in our battleship grey existence at least we’ll have “free-tonal” entertainment, that which will likely further accompany our post-show “without tonal center” conversations as we dine over our “multi-tonal” varieties of Pollock strewn gruel. In short, I’ll stick with the smorgasbord of affekt meticulously coursed out by our nourishing forefather of centralizing harmony. Oops, that little rant may have gone a bit off the rails, my bad.

    • I can imagine sitting in our den with my parents watching Firing Line, although I will admit that I don’t remember this particular episode. It reminds me more of my best friend since kindergarten who later went to Princeton and became a close friend of Mr. Buckley and became famous for his fight (with Bill) to keep women off the register.

      Fascinating discussion. Thanks, ML Light.
