Just literally stumbled across this site via a strange & rather circuitous route this morning.
I look forward to many happy (or maybe not so ‘happy’ per se) hours in this little community & hopeful that I can in my own small way make a contribution.
But first I need to find my feet here.

    I like reading – give me a good book (preferably hardcover) over digital guff any day of the week – none of which will work once the Electricity is all gone anyway!

      EDIT (I tried to edit the post but there was too much HTML code for my poor luddite mind)
      Are all the books only available through the Evil Empire of Jeff Brazos? Amazon US costs me twice the book price in postage once my pocket gets picked by UPS and then HMRC and finaly the UK Post Office, plus I am simply not happy about spending on any Amazon site at all & will only do this if there is no alternative.
      I am in the UK – have you thought about getting a UK reseller?

      Interesting site – was not aware of this.
      It’s US based again though, which is usually a problem as far as monstrous postage costs go. I recently bought a Ben Davidson book, thin softcover for $30. Postage cost me double that by the time all the various import taxes etc had been added. UPS really suck.
      I have been getting into the habit of sourcing PDF lately & taking the file to the local printers – sometimes works out well, but all too often it’s just not fair on the author who obviously gets nothing (unless I bought the PDF of course)

      Book Depository is great but I’m pretty sure the money doesn’t get back to Joseph. I use it to order older crafts books (like knitting and weaving) plus occasionally old novels we can’t find anywhere else.

      Which unfortunately is now treated as a foreign country – I got Microcosm and Medium from Lulu US in about a week. I may try the UK the next time but between paying in pounds and paying extra tariffs and charges I’m not sure which option is “better,” and sadly both are kind of expensive (not Joseph’s fault, he doesn’t control that part of the process).

    Nothing wrong with plugging books Peter, hear hear hear, plug on…in fact I’ll go further, I think it wise for more people to start dusting them off (or purchase some while you can) and using them and put the “devices” down…completely different understanding and experience with information, i.e., a person may actually become knowledgeable, and not just be able to spew out the latest fashionable “byte” size bits of information, and mistaking it for an actual argument… “the devil is in the details”…

      AAAAUUUGGGGHHHH. I put sticky notes in my books as tabs but I consider my books to be too important for me to be defacing them. I hate buying used books, often the only available, with someone’s version of “ideas” written in them.

      I’m with Wu Wu on this one – I also annotate some books with a light soft pencil, but for more detailed notes I tend to use a post-it tab (not the big square jobbies, but the thin strips) to mark the page and cross-referenced with my notebooks – each subject I have a serious interest in has it’s own notebook.
      Other people’s reading later on I care not one iota for, as I do not sell or give away my books.

      I agree. I put together what JPF books I did not have and found it wasn’t all that easy. Best to act now.

    Yeah, I just paid something like 70 dollars in shipping for two weaving books – I mean I got the books discounted but the shipping was outrageous and again out of the control of the author. I am starting to suspect that shipping isn’t just censorship it is also an attempt to prevent people from sending things back and forth at all – even small gifts between family and friends (I live in Ireland and have sent in the past everything from an “Irish Rock” to packages of postcards – but probably not anymore).

    I would tend to agree with this observation.
    It seems to me one of the principal aims of these lockdowns is to restrict & fundamentally eliminate free movement even in our own countries, as well as to shut down the dissemination of ideas contrary to the current orthodoxies. What better way to stop new ideas than to prevent people socializing? You can go to a bloody football or a tennis match, or a beach barbequeue if you are in the G7 but you cannot go to a club & see a band, or go to a theatre with friends?
    Authoritarian regimes despise the entertainment industry as they cannot fully control it in normal times but nowadays? Invent a new scariant (that is killing NOBODY AT ALL in the UK) and tighten the lockdowns again.
    Next will be a climate lockdown – I have been saying this for almost 18 months now, and it is inevitable.
