President Trump firing the FBI director as he did strikes such a strange chord. One can only ask, What happened? What provoked such a firing instead of showing the man the door when Trump took office? Those are reasonable questions. The answer that the president can hire and fire at will is no answer at all … unless one were content with the notion of rule by whim.

As in the case of the Syria missiles, which had no military use whatsoever, there is a clash between oligarchical factions. A theory: there was a deal with the people behind the former director to keep him in, but somebody – the former director or other parties – broke that deal.
Comey’s been a cog in the Clinton machine since at least 2002. Its curious that he was allowed to keep the post, at all, unless it was to keep him close to figure out his game plan.
