    Omelas Not Looking So Great Now, Huh?

    “Grandmother Ursula has a famous parable, a famous and very short story, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. You can read it in its entirety here. It is a perfect re-articulation of a classic philosophical challenge. Would you live somewhere that offers you happiness if it meant keeping a child in a basement in continuous pain? Where would you even go, if you only know Omelas?

    The ones who walk away from Omelas prefer the uncertainty of the unknown to the certainty of their complicity in cruelty. They do not vote for the lesser of two evils. They do not say “if you don’t have anything to hide, what’s your problem with total surveillance?” They leave the dissociated happiness and premise of safety because a system that relies on cruelty cannot provide happiness by definition.”
