Unfortunately I am unable to to figure out how to place the photo to which this text refers onto this wall. The photo appears in an issue of BYTE on Artificial Intelligence. It is a quite interesting photo in that it shows (in 1985) a scanning electron micrograph of brain cells grown in tissue culture on a Motorola 68000 (board) The center clump of balls is a
group of somas, and the thin lines radiating outward from the clump are the neural processes.
The Ie traces are 2 to 5 microns across, and the traces on the nerve processes taper to less than 0.2 micron across.

If this apparent attempt to merge human and machine was being worked on in 1985 ….
The archive of Byte Magazine can be found at archive.org. The photo referred to can be found in Byte, April 1985, Vol. 10, No. 4, pp. 284.

There you go. Enjoy! https://ia801908.us.archive.org/26/items/byte-magazine-1985-04-rescan/1985_04_BYTE_10-04_Artificial_Intelligence.pdf
Also the page is 286 NOT 284.
Thanks. I’ve copied the picture. Here it is:

Thanks BlueWren! I think it quite an interesting picture. It would be interesting to follow up on this. The info about the picture on page 299 doesn’t offer many leads as to who, what, when, where, or why. Well, we can guess the “why.”
Cheers.
do you mean the disturbing picture on page 290? horrid idea!
As well … Unfortunately there are, more than likely, a number of extremely disturbing lines of research being conducted in a variety of areas. I occasionally shudder to think, given that these few examples are from 1985, what inquiry may be going on today. I am afraid that we as human beings, more often than not, forget to adequately consider the possible consequences of our scientific activities. That we can do something, in and of itself, does not necessarily justify that we should.
Cheers.
