… No, I understand that Cabaret was set in Weimar Germany. I mean to say that WE (as a bounded area) with things proceeding as it looks like they will, barring some non-local intervention, find ourselves being East Germany on steroids (a virtually occupied, surveilled, controlled bounded area that has more nuclear weapons [and God knows what else] than the Soviets could have ever dreamt of deploying in East Germany. I was simply welcoming everyone to the (more than likely) REALITY that will “show up” soon. A Welcome to all from the Ministerium für Staatsicherheit (one may simply replace the STASI reference with their favorite three letter agency or any combination of them one wishes) … hence the reference to The Lives of Other People. To paraphrase Margo Channing, “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy Dark Night of the Soul.”
