In approximately 10 pages, Orwell in his sobering prose tells a story of his time in British-occupied Burma in the 1930s where his forced shooting of a rabid elephant and the behavior of all parties during the upheaval caused his realization that imperialism destroys both the freedom of the occupiers as well as the occupied. It’s like giving your brain a cold shower.
