The Khazarians were apparently a population forming part of the Turkish-speaking language group and not Mongolian/Chinese.
Khazars were a mixed group of people who adopted Judaism to withstand forced christianization from the north and forced islamization from the south. Khazarian domain extended from the northern shores of the Caspian sea to the northern shores of the Black Sea, just north of the Caucasus mountains. The Khazar Khanate was ruled by Turkic people, but the Turkic element was a minority element (limited to the warrior caste and ruling class) which is why Turkic did not survive in those areas (except for Tatars and a few other isolated groups). The real Turkic people live east of the Caspian Sea, throughout Central Asia, extending into Western China. Khazars were likely a mixed group of Iranian or Slavicized-Iranians (e.g. Sarmatians, Alans) led by a Turkic ruling class, and a mix of many people. Today’s Ashkenazi Jews are the descendants of Khazars who emigrated to eastern Europe after Russians wiped out the Khazar empire.
