Politically defining Eagles and Turkeys. Extremely dangerous political information. Are you one of the “people of the United States” or a British loyalist and an “inhabitant of the United States”? Both are mentioned in the Definitive Treaty of Peace, 1783, (8 stat 80), specifically Article III therein. This treaty is still enforce today and is listed in the current Department of State, “Treaties in Force”.

This treaty may in some respects have been superceded by the Treaty of Ghent that ended the War of 1812-1815.
The treaty failed to address the three main issues which lead to the war: the British economic blockade of France, the impressment of thousands of neutral American seamen into the British Royal Navy against their will, and the British support of hostile Indian tribes along the Great Lakes frontier.
The British “impressed” what they felt were “inhabitants on the land”.
