Rise of the South African reich?
Short background.
Cape colony taken by French under Napoleon.
British empire takes it permanently in same war.
Large groups of Afrikaner Boers trek north to form independent states (Transfal, Orange)
British imperialists initiate conflict to claim area (despite Queen Victoria saying empire didn’t need more territory.
Result- Anglo-Boer wars.
Kaiser supported Boer and supplied 55,000 new Mausers through German West Africa.
Britain finally wins ugly war.
Lord Kitchener borrowed a page from the Kaisers west Africa and set up concentration internment camps for Boer families.
About 40 to 60 thousand died of starvation, typhoid etc.
Still very much remembered today.
1914 Union of South Africa had brought all British South African colonies into Union under the Empire.
Generals Smuts and Botha pushed South Africa to join WW I on British side.
Huge resentment in Boer community.
1914 Boer general Maine Maritz leads large rebellion vs South African government.
He’s defeated and flees to German west Africa and on to Spain working now for the Germans.
He actually returns to South Africa in 1923 working as a spy for Germany.
During 20s more and more Boers openly supported Germany and, finally, Hitler.
Naturally the German population of former German West Africa, which was awarded to Britain at Versailles, which they, then in turn, put under South Africa’s jurisdiction, were also pro German and pro Nazi.
The Germans there even formed a sort of Hitler youth which was completely in the open.
WWII was a huge tipping point in South African history.
Two semi secret organizations came to play a huge role (even now?).
First of these is the Broederbond.
First established as a secret society in 1918.
Was founded as an exclusively Afrikaner, Calvinist secret society dedicated to promoting Afrikaner interests in any way possible.
Founded by hardcore Afrikaners (ie anti-British) HJ Klioper, HW can der Metwa, DHC du Plessis and Rev. Jozua Naude.
You cannot overstate the influence of this group.
As national socialists they understood the importance of gaining control of government and corporations.
On the corporate side, for example, it is well known that today’ANBSA bank was controlled for decades by the broederbond.
They were also behind the formation of Armscor that was built during apartheid to develop and produce low and high tech weaponry. Very very successful.
(Sorry I’m getting ahead of myself).
Many people I have spoken to very quietly will admit that they are still afraid of this organization (though officially it was disbanded after Mandela took over).
Second organization: the Ossewabrandwag.
Openly pro-Nazi group officially established in1939.
(Just google them and check out their emblem.)
Slogan: My God, My Volk, My Land)
In a report sent by a German spy (Lothar Stittig), and read by Hitler, it stated that the OB based itself on the Fuhrer principle – was against Jews, Parliament, communists and was agitating for national socialism.
OB formed a paramilitary group modeled on the SA called the Stormjaers (storm troopers).
This group carried out many acts of sabotage in South Africa. They even had their South Africa version of Kristallnacht.
Many were arrested and interned along with German and Italian POWs.
Those interned included future PM and President John Vorster and the man who set up South Africa’s intelligence, secret police , convert operations and an assassin team, Hendricks van den Bergh.
Hendriks was a Nazi in ideology and modeled his network on the gestapo. Ultimately all security networks reported directly to him.
He was feared by everyone (much more on him in another post.
Interestingly, despite his direct involvement in many, many murders, he was allowed to retire undisturbed by the post apartheid government.
He retired, lived to an old age and, like Himmler, managed a chicken farm.
Back to OB Organisation.
Founder was Johannesburg Van Rensberg.
Highly influential. Best friend of Hendrik.
Rensburg was minister of justice in the Union government under Smuts.
As such he traveled extensively to Europe.
We know that he met directly Hitler, Goering and other top Nazis.
He was hugely impressed with Nazi Germany and while there he conceived the idea of the OB organization.
At its height the OB had over 300,000 pro Nazi members.
It is not known exactly how many members joined the stormtrooper subgroup.
Another member of the OB wasOswald Pirow (1890-1959).
During his career he became minister of justice and Defence.
He, too, traveled extensively through Europe in 1938 meeting Hitler, Mussolini, Franco and Salazar.
Highly impressed by national socialism.
He founded South African airways with the help of Goering, who supplied Junkers aircraft.
He was a good friend of Sir Oswald Mosley and , the even further right winger, Anthony Baron.
All of this is leading up to the fact that in 1948, the National (socialist) Party won the election and held power till Madiba was released and established a real democracy.
One of the NPs first acts was the apartheid act. Their racism was as bad as that of the Nazis.
What I have found very interesting is how little research has been done on the overt fascism of NP South Africa, other than the heinous apartheid system.
It is curious to me that the archives of the OB were untouchable until 2019. I am not sure how many researchers are looking there even now.
The broederbund were said to have disbanded in the early 90s.
There is very little written about them given their enormous influence.
All of my light research shows that post WW II South Africa was purely fascist. It’s connections to the Nazis is obvious when you look at the backgrounds of virtually all influential NP members. My spider senses tell me that the rat line had to extend here.
Okay folks.
Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this.
I’ll be adding more as soon as I can.
The next post will focus on South Africa’s most feared man, South Africa’s Gestapo Mueller, Hendrik van den Berg.

I find this particularly fascinating as we had an AFS student from Bloemfontaine, Orange Free State, live with us briefly in 1967. Her name was Jill Barlow and spoke Afrikaans and English (white). She was clearly a proponent of the apartheid system, thinking that the Black nanny who raised both her father and her siblings should be sent out to the newly built communities. She was the first truly stubborn racist we had met. We had a Black horse trainer at the time with the same last name as us so we tried to introduce her to American Blacks to show that they were VERY human. She eventually got irritated with my parents trying to convince her that apartheid was wrong, so she petitioned to leave our family.
It turns out she met with that sentiment as she moved from family to family across the country and eventually got the picture, changed her mind completely, and angered her parents beyond belief, When she moved back to South Africa, she went to Cape Town to college, became an attorney to represent the Black Community and moved to Botswana where she became a representative for the region.
Try as I might, I can not remember her last name now as she married. She came to visit us in the summer of 1994 with her family and told us this story. My parents were still alive then and could not have been prouder when she came specifically to thank them for opening up her eyes to the truth.
Thank you so much for this history lesson, Bill Woodward. I certainly am looking forward to the next entry on this subject!!!
The Free State was hardcore Afrikaner.
I’m glad she saw the light and I’m sure her parents remained furious.
South Africa has a very strange past and little of use has been written.
Thanks for your interest!
