I live as an expat in the Middle East – in the UAE. I would never describe myself as politically connected or “in the know”. However, there is some word on the expat street here that the situation with Qatar is being “sorted out”.
I do not know exactly what this means:
– a return to the pre-incident situation?,
– a smoothing over of things?,
– that the actions in the foreign policy sphere were the covering theatre for some other set of actions?,
– that there is a power struggle in Qatar and one faction was supported by Saudi et al. while the other was not and was being disrupted / punished in some way?,
– something more complex?.
In our speculations, let’s not forget the very large US military base in Qatar.Mr Messeyn’s interpretation of events – of an opening schism between London and Washington on Middle East policy – although interesting and possible, seems a touch naive and “rose tinted” to me.
The timing he notes of these actions taking place during Ramadan is noteworthy. In the Middle East, this is indeed a time of year when the pace of life changes, work hours are reduced, many people focus more on their religious experience and commitment, and family meetings and occasions are the central part of social life. That these events have been timed for Ramadan indicates planning and forethought.

While not having any special information, and not reading Arabic, my sensation is that in a few weeks time the media will have forgotten about this crisis just like they have forgotten those Tomahawk missiles in Syria (one would say that they have been “mind-wiped”). To be added to the list of Saudi regime failures…
Yes, the media has already moved on here… if it spends any time on it at all, it is just to report “logistical” updates. No analysis or interpretation.
