Italian historical re-enactments involve a lot of archery and crossbow compet itions using targets in a public square, sports field etc. However, in practice sessions the archers go into the woods (duly fenced) which is much more fun. In England there are longbow re-enactments mimicking battle but these require a lot of space for safety purposes (spectators do not usually bring shields and armour!). The most widely used reconstructed historical crossbow is a large weapon designed to be set on a platform and used for defensive purposes on castle walls etc.
