So Ms Pelosi & C. are setting up as righteous iconoclasts to “cast down” old statues and change long-established place-names. In Europe this is well known as the last resort of politicians who have nothing substantial to say, and of course it is good for polarizing opinion into two vociferous camps (while most people look on indifferently). While of course, in the longer timespan (I mean centuries) statues and monuments will EVENTUALLY collapse, be demolished, moved, sold etc.
Now it is curious to read this Confederate-nostalgia-oriented article asking rhetorically why the monument to old Ben, Confederate finance chief and R0thschild agent in America, has been carefully preserved. The answer, I aver, is not far to seek

    • So when the apartheid regime in South Africa ended and the new government came into power, one of the many changes put in place was the changing of place names: airports, street names, city names etc.. In most cases the replacement names were important struggle heroes and personages. As a person who knew the old names as a child and the new names as an adult, I know both names. Interestingly, it wasn’t a complete clean slate. Some names were kept, such as Jan Smuts. At the time, I think some people were upset about it but I don’t remember any violence over it.
Much later (+/- 3 years ago) the students at University of Cape Town protested about a statue of Cecil John Rhodes. It was an unpleasant episode and even made international news. It got a lot more press. Experiment for what’s happening elsewhere? Given what is unfolding, I would have to suggest YES.
