Having worked with cell lines as a lab tech, I can believe just how easy it is for this to be true. Even with sterile technique practices in place, contamination happens and human error happens. So much of what I did back then seemed little more than magic and faith. I mixed components in various ways and ran tests. I knew what was supposed to happen and why but I had no way of actually testing each assumption or component. This was very evident when we had an incredible success with a potentially life saving technique but we were never able to replicate it.
