    For the philosophers in here: a few polarities that I’ve extracted from the works of Guénon. I find them most useful.

    True – False
    Higher – Lower
    Inner – Outer
    Unity – Multiplicity
    Quality – Quant ity
    Essence – Substance
    Subtle – Gross

      So, I’m thinking “oh dear,” if one has been used to considering “essence” and “substance” as rather synonymous … does that mean one has rather limited experience with the substantial side, or the essential? or both?

        I would say we all have much experience with substance, but we *are* the essence. The confusion is partly semantic, we say “substantial” about things that can be grasped like gold, as opposed to say bitcoin, that can evaporate at any moment. The orthodox doctrines say the unmanifest Creator is pure being. That’s the highest. Creation is the reflection thereof, a mirror image, therefore lower. In that context it’s easier to see the difference.
