American Identity, Messianic drives and the demonisation of Russia…. since 1881…. (though Dr Farrell traces this much further back).

19th century America, while being fairly indifferent to Russia and disparaging towards the Orient, tended to claim strong moral superiority with a dualistic world view as to the virtues of Americans as compared to the vices of Europeans, meaning the English and Western Europe. Just look at how easy it was for financial interests to convicne people of the rightness of acquiring an Empire by “liberating” the Spanish-ruled territories of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Filipinas…
The anti-Russian crusade in the article seems to be a mirror image of the same campaign in Britain, where “liberal” mercantilist economic cliques promoted their interests under the thin guise of rhetoric about democracy and freedom.
I actually just ordered this book a few days ago…if it’s any good I’ll pass it on.
Thanks
