China is establishing a polar research center…. which will include 10 educational bases in the polar regions:
“Twenty-five universities and research organizations jointly established a polar research center in Beijing on Sunday, with an aim to promote polar information sharing and research.
Based at Beijing Normal University, the center has 25 members and will focus on research such as environmental monitoring and simulation of polar regions, polar environmental change and its global impact, navigated channel resources, the polar economy, and sustainable development.”

The key phrase here is “polar economy”, while “environmental monitoring” could easily include upper atmosphere and beyond.
And if we use Hannes Alven type thinking to model the electric and magnatic flows in the solar system, they could potentially be interested in tapping into a different kind of pole and its associated electro magnetic flows..
Good point. I wonder how a nice big Tesla Tower would operate in polar regions.
