The little woodpecker that drills away at the trees around here is back! He’s unafraid and lets me get close to watch…. Beautiful little bird!

The woodpecker (Picus) figures in archaic Roman mythology. The handsome Picus was a son of Saturn (an association with the Golden Age) and was sought after by Nymphs and Naiads, whom he rejected. But after rejecting the sorceress Circe she turned him into a woodpecker out of pique. He is also associated with the archaic Roman Mars, a figure more linked to agriculture and fertility than the later warlike Ares.
