Suppose a Chinese Sub or ? – Was hacking the cables, Fitz dispatched to area with orders to run stealth, it could explain why ACL Crystal INITIALLY NOT CHARGED.
I don’t think the Captain of the Fitz went to his quarters to lie down…not in the shipping lanes. He was real busy on COMS requiring his full attention knowing he left the bridge with trusted qualified crew.

Is it possible that before a sub went on a mission to mess with an undersea cable, they put in place a backup plan to protect against destroyers chasing their sub? A reasonable/low cost backup plan would be to have freighters ready to intercept and steer towards a destroyer, forcing the destroyer to lose contact.

I went and dug around for incidence of undersea cables being cut in June. It seems to center around Vietnam for that month, and service to the Vietnam undersea cable system was supposed to finish June 17th. The date of the USS Fitzgerald event. The next week it appears that talks between Vietnam and China over the South China sea sovereignty were abruptly halted.

China – Why Chinese Submarines could soon be quieter than US ones. “This more intensified cat-and-mouse game would also result in the risk of underwater accidents … between submarines or with surface ships,” he said. “The quieter the submarine is, the greater the likelihood of such navigational safety hazards and, potentially, they could cause diplomatic incidents in the context of those maritime disputes and of course, the persistent Sino-US divergence in views over foreign military activities in coastal states’ exclusive economic zones. ” http://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy-defence/article/2130870/chinas-nuclear-attack-submarine-too-easy-detect
And, of course, the US has been doing this for decades. Even leaving heavy duty devices on Soviet cables like near Vladivostok and Petropavlovsk.
Last thought – The story kept changing too many times. The same “bad actors” are still around. Remember Ted Olson saying Barbara called him from her cell phone on the plane 9/11? Well, how about the sailor who called or texted his Dad? The criminal parasites lack the creativity to change the script.
