The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been under assault for decades and there are various warlords and western backed militias fighting it out over its significant resources. Quite frankly it suits the western powers to keep it a basket case so that there is never a stable government to protect locals and negotiate properly for mineral rights. This Ebola crisis is more in the Republic of Congo which is more to the West and North and towards the areas hotly disputed by French, British, US and is plagued with various Islamic terrorist groups, often funded by the gulf states…. this is also the area where the various oil companies employ their mercenaries to “protect” oil drilling in the Niger Delta while decimating local populations which may object…. also there are several US linked bio weapons labs in the area and this is the area of several misadventures involving mercenary forces, probably including the quickly hushed up raid gone wrong in Niger a month or so ago. It’s complicated by unresolved colonial era disputes, pre existing tribal rivalries, multi national corps acting along the lines of the British East India Company, and mercenary alliances, and is probably more to do with factional rivalry than a pro or anti western government in any one country.
