Byzantine manoeuvres in Rome. The office of the Italian president apparently makes a crude attempt to “frame” the incoming premier by giving journalists a text containing words he did not actually say, as can be seen by watching the recording of the statement being given live. Not unsurprisingly the words never said were to the effect that “Italy would never leave the EU” and that the new government would “adhere to EU-imposed expenditure limitations”. These were published by major newspapers (whose readership has crashed in recent years).
