(I will not post much on mideast politics as I found a much better forum for this topic, but this might be one of my last ones shared here). Why I think it is a great idea for Iran to leave Syria totally (including all shia militias), hitting many birds with one stone (even though it might hurt some shia supremacist egos and may seem like a defeat): (1) Russia will either be happy or upset. Let them ponder.(2) Israel/US have one less excuse to bother Iran (3) Iran does not have to pay to sustain or rebuild Syria. There is nothing in Syria except access to Mediterranean. Russian troops can secure access without Iranian involvement (with Assad or Russian boots). Assad is strong enough now to stand on his own feet, and Syria is almost free of jihadists. This will put RUSSIA in a bind. They will have to fight it out alone in IDLIB. And they will have to fight NATO on their own. Not Iran’s business to fight Kurds or Nato in Syria. Let the Russians & Turks battle it out.

I am probably being naive here, not knowing what is really going on behind the scenes. There is an EXISTENTIAL reason for Iran’s presence in Syria, as long as Iran is ruled by anti-Israel rulers (mullahs or otherwise), and it is to avert a potential nuclear strike by Israel on Iran’s industrial (incl. nuke/missiles) facilities. In other words, the moment Israel drops a nuke on Iran, Israel will be attacked by land from Syria & Lebanon. And a land bridge is needed for supplies. That is my guess after I read this article (and Israel can easily fabricate an excuse to nuke Iran): https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2018-07-17/if-iran-gets-back-to-nukes-israel-is-ready-to-strike
