At the time, I had just moved into a new house that was less than a mile from the football ground. I was hanging some doors, whilst listening to the commentary on BBC radio. It was the FA Cup semi-final. I remember quite clearly that the BBC’s commentator embarked on an ad hominem attack on the Liverpool supporters on the radio – as if he was working from a script. His tones were more measured than what was subsequently published in The Sun, but there was no escaping the vitriol of his ‘reportage’. By contrast, as the thousands of dazed fans left the stadium in a state of shock walking towards the city centre, the people of the city of Sheffield came out of their dwellings to offer their practical support. The BBC commentator was, as far as I know, never reprimanded for his outrageous remarks and his ‘commentary’ was never used in later BBC ‘news’ reports about the disaster, which was rather unusual to say the least. Whilst I don’t think that the disaster itself was engineered, I to think that the British Deep State/estabishment nurses an acute prejudice against the people of Liverpool and the Merseyside region in general.
