New tasks: Legoknekt admitted that he killed Dag Hammarskjöld
      Published yesterday 06.31

Now information is presented that points to the former Swedish UN chief Dag Hammarskjöld being subjected to an assassination in 1961. In the work on a documentary, a research group has found what they mean is never previously shown documents. In addition, a friend of the early-pointed and now deceased pilot and lego-refugee Jan van Risseghem says that this must have acknowledged that he shot down the aircraft.

The night between September 17 and 18, 1961 plunged the plane on which the UN Secretary-General was located. Hammarskjöld was on his way to Ndola in present Zambia to meet Moise Tshombe, the leader of the Katanga breakaway republic. The purpose was to mediate peace during the so-called Congo crisis.

A mile from Ndola airport plunges the DC-6 that Hammarsköld travels in. For decades it has been speculated whether Hammarskjöld’s plan was shot down or subjected to a sabotage of British or Belgian intelligence services. Both countries had strong economic mining interests in Katanga.
The friend points out van Risseghem

Early on, it was reported that a British / Belgian pilot, who seemed to be a legend on the Katanga side, would have shot down the plane. Pilots were called Jan van Risseghem.

      – We have interviewed a close friend of Jan van Risseghem. He tells us that van Risseghem admitted that he shot down Dag Hammarsköld, says journalist Andreas Rocksén, who worked on the documentary Cold Case Hammarskjöld.

How do you know you can trust these data?

      – The friend gives a detailed description of how it went. Which plan van Risseghem used and how he flew from a primitive airport out in the bush. For example, the friend gives credible details about how van Risseghem put in an extra tank in the aircraft in order to be able to rush the engine before starting at the small airport. It was required to be able to lift on a shorter distance, much like pilots do on aircraft carriers.

Are there other tasks that point in the same direction?

      – Overall, the friend confirms a telex message released by the US authorities in 2014. In that document, an American ambassador points out van Risseghem already the same day that the crashed plane was found.

Widows say they have filled in logs

Jan van Risseghem denied throughout his life that he had something to do with the assassination. But among his friends he should have recognized several times. Publicly he showed up his flight logs as alibi. They showed that he was not in Katanga when Hammarskjöld’s plan collapsed.

      – The flight logs contain incorrect information about pilots he should have flown with. In addition, Jan van Risseghem’s widow has told one of our researchers that she is the one who filled in the flight logs. That should not be the case, says Andreas Rocksén.

      Why did she do that?

      – It gets us to suspect that she tried to hide that her husband was involved in the incident.

Theories and conspiracies have flourished ever since the fateful night of 1961 when Hammarköld died. Likewise, these new tasks are also likely to be received with skepticism in several camps. The crucial point is who would have the motives and resources to murder the UN Secretary-General, in addition without being revealed.
There were strong political interests that wanted to get rid of Hammarskjöld. He stood up for the UN Declaration and often stood behind the small Member States’ interests against the great powers. Belgians and British also had great financial interests in the Katanga mines. An example of this was in the UK. There, a group of right-wing politicians gathered in the British Parliament in something they called “The Monday Club”. They were bitter opponents of Britain’s decolonization policy and they also expressed a clear hatred of just Hammarskjöld.
New details about the tail fin

In the work with the documentary, which was co-produced with SVT, the research group also found previously unknown images on the plane that Hammarskjöld crashed in.

That there was a large hole in the tail fin has not been known before, according to Andreas Rocksén.

      – There is a note about the tail fin in the original accident investigation. It describes a damaged tail fin, but does not talk about the hole. We have shown this picture for two experts who believe that the damage probably occurred due to a missile or from pine trees, says Andreas Rocksén.

Behind the new tasks are also Mads Brügger, Göran Björkdahl, Johanna Johnsson and Fons Faeyerts. The documentary Cold Case Hammarsköld is scheduled to be broadcast in SVT later in the spring.
