    • When I was in elementary school, probably 5th grade, about the time we all got recorders to start learning to play something (I was already playing the – sorry Joseph- the PIANO), Leonard Bernstein had a children’s program for symphonies around the country so he came to Cincinnati and our school was sent down to the Symphony Hall where we were entertained by the Cincinnati Symphony with Mr. Bernstein explaining every instrument, how the music read on the sheet, and how the orchestra came together to create the music. I was probably 10 or 11 and I can still see the whole event as if I was still sitting in the 10th or so row.

These are the kinds of experiences that children no longer get to cherish. My sister and I used to dance in our living room with the victrola (!) playing the Nutcracker Suite and we were the ballerinas with dog accompanying. To live in flyover country and see Leonard Bernstein. Simply wouldn’t happen today.

I think Dr. Farrell would agree that we were so lucky to have been born when we were (even though we didn’t think so at the time.) For us to remain a civil society, we must get back there, at the very least.
