Not exactly ‘got it backwards’ but it is certainly IS more complex and disputed. There are multiple streams of the word’s use and several theories on the “Slav” and “slaves” similarity. The one I go with is Slav came first around 580 and slavery came later around 800 when Romans and Arabs came to capture them.

My real name has the word “Slav” as part of it, so I’m familiar with the various meanings of the term. Apparently the tribes originally called themselves the non-slave connotations (“Slav” meaning “word” or we understand each other as opposed to “Niemiec” – one who is incoherent, a foreigner, ie the neighboring German tribes). But later on when Romans and Arabs came to capture these people as slaves, they used the similar sounding term on them, but now with a slavery connotation. Anyway, I go by Zeke here because my real name gets even more complex than this. I’ve had a difficult time with it, let’s just say.

I find it ironic how Bill Maher is attacked by the “NPC” people hiding behind masks, as he exemplifies how not to be politically correct. They vandalized a billboard of his, even though it makes no sense given the irony. As much as you might despise him, I would be careful not to use the vulgar language here.
