Two of my fellow grad students (we graduated in 1979 for goodness sakes) were from Turkey. One is now a professor here and said that his brother, a retired two-star general said that the people who staged the coup were, in fact, those who were sympathetic to Gulen but that it was all too well planned and easily defeated to think that Erdogan did not have a hand in it. He was afraid that the PM was acting more like a dictator and moving the government toward a religious based, not secular society. The truth is, now we have a much bigger mess in the Middle East region than ever before. Only time will tell.
But hey, our own Navy with the (verbal only) support of NATO may simply start WWIII with China in the South China sea so what is the concern? (sarcasm off)
