Could this be evidence of a phenotype-sensitive protein? Anyway, looking at this documentary on the “Spanish Flu”, the world seems to be getting off relatively lightly, at least at the present stage. Back in 1918, communication was much slower and it is hard to imagine how that event would have been reported today.
To be fair, the concept of a virus was just being discovered at this time in history. My father’s sister died of a ruptured appendix in 1918 because there was no surgeon around who could perform the surgery (NE Ohio!). The concept of being able to avoid the flu by staying away from sick people or from simply washing your hands, covering your nose when sneezing… the mass population had no clue.
