Hmmmmm, I’m quite sure that I’ve been given the impression (from somewhere) that we had mastered the whole dropping spacecraft by parachute thing (27 or so successful splashdowns) during the late 50s and 60s. To paraphrase Frasier when he and Niles had to learn how to ride bicycles, “there must be shelves of books on the subject in the NASA library”. It seems odd that now it appears we suddenly have to reinvent the parachute wheel.
