Well, I thought I’d share a little something to add a bit of positive light (time will tell) during a dark time for most of us. I’ve decided to bite bullet and move forward with a dream/goal of mine that I’ve had for some time.
I’ve toyed with small scale aquaponics (enough to feed my family) for a while now and for the past few years have been kicking around the idea of taking it to a larger scale. Early next month, I plan to break ground on a new 30’x52’ greenhouse that will be retrofitted with a full scale commercial aquaponics setup. A lot of care has gone into the design in order to be able to scale the production capacity (and building) as the business grows and in the near term, operate off the grid. I’m finally going to take the advice of CAF and Dr. JPF and help my community take control and locally source their food. I’m a bit nervous about the timing, being that things are spiraling more than usual. Like most of you on GDS, I sense a changing of the winds headed our way and I want to get out in front of it as quickly and effectively as I can. I’ve been saving for a few years to be able to bankroll this w/out any lending as that makes me nervous as well, haha. In these uncertain times, I feel that now more than ever tangible assets are the best assets. I have always been a bit of a prepper as well as an entrepreneur, hopefully my gamble will prove to be as “recession proof” as one could hope for, while producing a product that will be something I can feel good about in doing my part to help people.
I’m not quite sure what’s heading our way, or what life will be like before/during/after. Today is my Birthday and as I was thinking about the large amount of cash I’m about to gamble on a dream of mine, something hit me. Money is the easy part. Although I’m younger than many of the Gizars on here at 37yrs of age, I’ve rolled with a lot of punches in my life. I’ve lost a business in the 08 crash and managed to rebounded. I spent most of my adult life fighting for Uncle Sam all over darker places in this world and survived. I’ve started other business ventures and taken body shots while delivering haymakers of my own and always managed to either come out financially ahead, or have significantly increased my human capital (skills). As I sit here pecking this out and eating my breakfast this morning, before anyone in the house has begun to stir, it hit me. You can always make more money, that’s easy, but recognizing opportunity and taking action is the struggle.
Here’s to making a dream become a reality.

The greenhouse is an excellent idea, I imagine you mean the type where naturally generated CO2 – the gas of life for plants – fills the space, increasing growth rates and virtually eliminating pests. You only let outside air in before entering to do work inside.
Oh the irony of the truth.
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday, Ronin. I haven’t tried aquaponics but I was a commercial greenhouse grower in the very far north NY (Adirondacks) where it gets to -40F. Despite years in botany, design build landscape architecture, the greenhouse was definitely a learning experience and it cost me LOTS of money. Be sure you have very good air flow within the house: bending stems are strong. Make sure you have plenty of sticky cards to monitor pests. Test test test your water and whatever soil you use. Most of all, GOOD LUCK!!!!
