I have had a great deal of difficulty finding sources on Byzantine philosophy even when I searched for papers by the three researchers that Farrell recommended Dumbarton Oats, John Meyendorff, and John Romaninde. Also, I tried looking for works of John Julius Norwich, sir Walter Scott, and the Byzantine scholar and monk Micheal Psellos. My luck changed over the weekend when I found a couple of sources on Byzantine Philosophy that critically analyze the ideas perpetuated by Byzantine schools of thought. The first book that I found titled “Byzantine Philosophy and its Ancient Sources” by Katerina Ierodiakonou. The author is a professor of ancient philosophy at the University of Athens and a professor of ancient philosophy at the University of Geneva. This work analyzes the influences that Neo-Plantonism and Stoicism had on Byzantine philosophy. This work takes an in depth analysis into the ideas Byzantine philosophers had. This book was published in 2002 and it is available for a relatively inexpensive price on the Abebooks website, but it is pricey in other sources. I have already ordered a copy of this book.
The other book that I found is available on archive.org for free. The title is “Byzantine Philosophy a Framework Analysis by Stefan Grossman published in 2014. The author was an attorney and has been a private researcher into philosophy since 2008. This work analyzes the ancient influences on Byzantine philosophy. It examines its ideas about metaphysics and cosmology. I highly recommend this book if you’re interested in learning more about Byzantine philosophy or medieval intellectual history. Here is the link to this book.

      • A great find!

      • Gemistos Plethon is a fascinating personality, author of hymns to the gods and an unusual cosmology giving prominence to Neptune. Which is understandable if you think that all organic life requires water…

        • Thanks for the source Dana Thomas I will check out his works. By the way, my mother found Stefan Grossman’s “Byzantine Philosophy a Framework Analysis”.

      • Thanks for sharing the source Cara. I will check it out sometime.
