I’ve been wanting to draw something to your attention and, hopefully, to Joseph’s.
Regarding the Antarctic, Herman Goering’s father was one of the first governors of German Southwest Africa (Namibia) during the late 19th century. In fact he initiated the genocide of 2 local tribes. I believe Herman accompanied his father.
Remember that Southwest Africa became a very important base for the German Antarctic whaling trade. Clearly Goering Sr would have learned a great deal about Antarctica. I am not sure what archival material exists about this, but Namibia has been, essentially, war free.

    • Interesting.
Also, one of the strangest ancient sites in the Pacific, Nan Mandol, is on an island that was occupied for a few years by the Germans.
