Hi all, for a couple of vidchats, mentions of skipping on Windows into Linux has been brought up with everything that Baal Gates has been doing.I have been switching back and forth between Linux and Windows for a few years
and wanted to share some things to help out.
First, if you are on windows, you can go into the store and search for Ubuntu. This will bring up the quintessential linux version that everyone gets introduced to at first. Ubuntu is what is called a distro (basically how the OS looks, is organized and the programs that comes with it). There are many, many, many distros around but if you’re new to linux, it is best to stick with the most commonly available as it will have the most support.
What you will find on the Windows store is an operating system you can run on top of windows. This will help you mess with your computer without fully committing to it and you can test things out and see how you like it.
One of the biggest positive aspects of linux is that the operating system and your personal files are completely separated which means it is really easy to organize and update your computer and its files.
Years ago, linux had a problem with not enough polished software to populate your computer but now, this isn’t an issue and one can find very refined software for just about anything.
In linux, another very important User interface is the prompt which is essentially a box where you enter computer jargon to make your computer do stuff and if you get into linux you may find yourself having to do just that a few times and more so if your computer system is particularly customized especially when you are working with some of the newer versions of distros and software.
Linux isn’t necessary but like many, I do believe it is very important to shun anything Baal Gates is involved with but linux is something that will need some of your time to be comfortable with as it is a very different environment and philosophy than what you are currently using and it requires self-motivation to problem solving. It is great for kids in my opinion though.
I didn’t have any help and was able to figure it out but for people having difficulty with computers, it may be challenging and it is best to have someone help if available.
Ubuntu is just a test drive and you can set up a hard drive to exclusively run this OS later on but you should also know that Microsoft is making inroads into the linux sphere and Ubuntu but there definitely are readily available solutions now to those much more so then in Windows. After your computer is sorted out, you can also consider tablets and cellphones depending on what your computing habits are. I am trying to go the opposite direction and de-digitize as much as I can and I’ve decided on a Librem 5 which has physical toggles for the antenna, microphone and camera. It is linux as well so if I feel adventurous, I can customize the phone much more. I’m also buying vinyl records and looking for a tube amp.
Anyway, I am certainly not an expert but if I can help, I’ll try and I can at least point you in the right direction.

    • I use windows and Ubuntu. Sadly I couldn’t get it set up in a dual boot so I use it sparingly on an old computer. It is much user friendly then it once was but stil a nightmare at times. However far more stable to use, no blue screens and or sudden reboots that I encounter daily with windows.
