    Twitter thread on CA wildfires.

    • Truth is when I took forestry and conservation courses in 1970 (!) we discussed that the redwoods and sequoias would be lost some day if they did not harvest the douglas fir and other understory trees that were being protected by the tree huggers who did not understand the ecology. Both are fire dependent species that need fires to clear the underbrush and the cambium is protected by a thick bark layer that protects them from the heat. Let the underbrush accumulate and the bark burns, the cambium is damaged and you eventually lose the tree sometimes thousands of years old. This is true of almost all fire dependent habitats which comprises most of California, both forest and brush lands . They have been needing to manage these landscapes for the last 50 years, at least… like when we discussed it in forestry school in 1970.

      • Great info; used to be a guy named Bill Wattenburg on local radio ( electrical engineer by training) who was born and lived in Sierra Mts of California. Wattenburg was always mentioning the same things you did in your comment.
